Work and Wear Online

What are some comfortable, yet heavy duty work boots?

I am looking for some work boots for my father. He is up and down a lot all day, being a mechanic, and goes through them like he does underwear. I need to find him some good, strong boots that will be comfortable, he works up to 16 hours a day, and yet last a while. He doesn't wear steel toed boots, though. Any ideas? It seems like he's tried them all.

  2. I've worked construction for 40 years and know that sore feet are a real pain in the sole. An orthotic for the boots will help a lot, as to the boots themselves, the brand should fit his foot comfortably and support his weight. The oil and grease that he works in will wear out any boot quickly, use a good grade of leather sealer on the boots and get two pair and alternate their use this will more than double the life span of the boots. My personal favorites are Red Wing, I've tried other brands but they don't seem to last as long. I worked in shipyards with oil, grease and sandblast dirt on a daily basis, if I could get 9 months out of a pair, I was doing great.

  4. Hi TinaKay: What a good daughter! Well, first try to notice what he is wearing now. Are they high, ankle or a work shoe. (That will give you some insight). Also (obviously) be sure of his proper size. I have done well over the years with Wolverine, Timberline and Herman survivors. All are good quality and expect to pay 70$ to $100. Also if your dad works indoors all day, make sure you don't get heavy insulation. Also, some boots are made with a sole that will resist oil, something to think about. Good luck and I'm sure your dad will love them.
  5. Red Wing. They are pricey but worth every dime.
